A gallery wall — how to design it and put it up
A gallery wall looks simple on Pinterest and ends up crooked, incoherent and cluttered in real life. Here is a process that works — step by step.
What makes a gallery wall good
A unifying element. Either the same frames in different sizes, or different frames around one theme — family photographs, landscapes, abstracts. Without it the wall looks like posters someone put down and forgot.
The second thing is rhythm and space. The pictures have to breathe — gaps of 5–8 cm, no crowding, no dramatic holes.
Three layouts
Symmetrical: frames of equal size in a 2×3, 3×3 or 2×4 grid. It works above a sofa, a bed or a dining table. Calm and structurally ordered.
Asymmetrical on a straight axis: different sizes, all aligned along the top or the bottom edge. It works in a hallway or on a narrow wall.
Free-flow: different sizes, different frames, intuitive placement. It works on a large living-room wall. It takes a long time to prepare, but the result is alive.
Gaps and the centre of the composition
Between frames: 5–8 cm. Less and it crowds, more and it scatters. Measure the frame edges, not the centres of the pictures.
Put the centre of the whole composition — the imagined middle of the entire block — at eye level, 150–160 cm from the floor. The same rule as for a single picture.
The practical process
Lay all the frames out on the floor. Spend 30–60 minutes looking for the arrangement. Photograph it from different angles so you can see what works.
Trace the frames onto brown wrapping paper at 1:1. Cut them out. Tape the paper mock-ups to the wall. Live with it for two or three days. Only then drill.
For the first frame mark the top and bottom point and use two hooks for stability. Work outwards from the central picture.
